Student Program for the 1st Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society

AI is becoming more pervasive in our lives and hence the impacts on society are increasing.  Topics including value alignment, data handling and bias, regulations, and workforce displacement have entered into everyday conversation. Only a multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder effort can find the best ways to address these concerns, including experts of various disciplines including ethics, philosophy, economics, sociology, psychology, law, history, and politics. In order to address these issues in a scientific context, AAAI and ACM have joined forces to start a new conference, the AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society.

As part of the conference we will accept about 20 students to come present their work, be part of the working groups, and meet mentors from the constellation of communities working on AI, ethics, and society.  This program which will join students and professionals from across disciplinary boundaries will provide the students with a unique experience to both present and expand their research.

Acceptance into the student program will include some travel funding to attend the conference on February 2-3 2018 in New Orleans, USA.

Students working on a variety of topics are encouraged to apply including:

• Value alignment
• Moral machine decision making
• Trust and explanations in AI systems
• Fairness and Transparency in AI systems
• Ethical design and development of AI systems
• AI for social good
• Human-level AI
• Controlling AI
• Impact of AI on workforce
• Societal impact of AI
• AI and law

Special Note for Students

ACM:SIGAI is a sponsor and is providing travel grants to students.  In order to be considered for a ACM:SIGAI travel grant you must be a member of ACM:SIGAI for three months before the event.  You can sign up at the ACM:SIGAI Website for $11.  Students receiving a SIGAI travel grant will be required to submit a headshot and a post-conference report for display at the ACM:SIGAI Travel Grant Website and possible publication in the AI Matters Newsletter.
